Wallace was St. Louis baseball at the turn of the century. The Browns infielder devoted his life to baseball, living the game as a player, coach and scout for over a half-century. One of the greatest fielders of any era, Wallace consistently led the majors in at least one fielding category on an annual basis. Old timers will tell you that Wallace was the greatest fielding shortstop in St. Louis history prior to Ozzie Smith. In 1902, Wallace handled a mind-boggling 17 chances at shortstop in a nine-inning game.
