“Bad Bill” was a workhorse at shortstop during his 20-year career. A consistent hitter with considerable power for his era, it was on defense where Dahlen made headlines. When he retired, the record-setting shortstop had handled 13,325 chances at shortstop. Plus, it was Dahlen’s 42-game hitting streak that Willie Keeler surpassed in 1897 to establish the NL record of 44 consecutive games with a hit (later tied by Pete Rose.)
