A pitcher who was more famous as a pinch-hitter, Criss is considered by most, including Bill James, as baseball’s first regular pinch-hitter. As a rookie in 1908, 41 of Criss’ 82 at-bats came as a pinch-hitter. For the season, Criss was 12-for-41 off the pines and 28-for-82 overall, good enough for a .341 batting average, which was actually higher than league leader Ty Cobb.
