Ty Cobb called Sullivan “the best catcher to ever wear shoe leather.” In 1909, Sullivan patented the first chest protector with a wind pad for compressed air. The star backstop also thwarted crosstown rival Johnny Kling, when the Cubs catcher boasted that he wanted to be the first catcher in big league history to catch 1,000 games. A quick check of the facts revealed that Sullivan had already turned the trick.
