During Game Two of the 1911 World Series, Marquard was entangled in a classic pitching duel with Philadelphia Hall of Famer Eddie Plank. In the sixth inning, with the score knotted at one, Marquard unleashed a high, inside fastball to A’s third sacker Frank Baker, with a man aboard. Baker promptly mashed the pitch into the outfield stands and was known forever more as “Home Run” Baker.
