Off the field, McGraw was a cultured gentleman, who tried to live a respectable New York life. On the field, McGraw was surly, arrogant, and would often unleash verbal tirades that would make even the most seasoned of sailors blush. McGraw was turn of the century baseball. Raw and unpolished. Hard and abusive. Rough and unwavering.
