This one’s a keeper! Every so often a vintage baseball card comes along that leaves even the avid enthusiast speechless. Such is the case for this absolutely spectacular SGC 86/7.5 Frank Chance “Yellow Portrait” Piedmont Cigarettes offering of the legendary Cubs Hall of Fame 1st baseman/manager Frank Chance. The SGC census report substantiates the “rare for the grade” concept as it relates to this museum worthy masterpiece since it is the SOLE copy at this elevated tier with NONE graded higher. Indeed, this remarkable Frank Chance T206 is the premier “yellow portrait” Piedmont Cigarettes specimen on SGC’s prestigious “pop” chart! Nicknamed the “Peerless Leader”, Frank Chance will eternally be remembered as the final link in the immortal “Tinker to Evers to Chance” double play combination. While a fine 1st baseman and batsman, Chance’s place in Cooperstown was solidified by his managerial success. From 1906 – 1910 he led the Cubs to four pennants in five years including two World Championships, a feat that should in no way be underestimated for the Cubs haven’t won since! His representation on this spectacular offering is also synonymous with championship caliber as it relates to “aesthetics” starting with the iconic Carl Horner portrait pose that exhibits brilliant facial hues and vivid clarity. The yellow/orange background is strikingly vibrant particularly due to its sunburst like hues, and while the image partly favors the left edge, it is affixed between four dazzling white borders. Extremely sharp right angled corners, straight edging, and an extremely bold Piedmont Cigarettes 350 Subjects ad back complete this century old marvel that has managed to outdistance “father time”! While we highly doubt that it was recently pulled from a cigarette pack, this highest graded SGC specimen’s miraculous technical attributes surely justify that notion!
