Here is one you don’t see very often! Presented here is a scarce T206 tobacco Christy Mathewson “Black Cap” PSA 5 specimen with the tough Tolstoi back advertisement. Currently, PSA’s “pop” chart lists only a single other specimen at this mid-grade plateau carrying the tough Tolstoi as back with a SOLE example graded higher. Of the 39 different ad backs, the prestigious “T206Resource.com” website currently ranks Tolstoi as the 18th rarest cigarette advertisement. Substantiating that notion is the PSA “pop” chart listing only 0.96% of the total 79,000+ identified ad backs as Tolstoi! In the past several years, tobacco card enthusiasts have placed an intense focus on gathering T206 back scarcities, and this outstanding Mathewson Tolstoi PSA 5 offering easily fits right into that category. Any card of the majestic “Big Six” merits serious attention, let alone one carrying a more obscure tobacco brand advertisement. Mathewson is widely regarded as one of the top five pitchers in baseball history, and his representation on this tough T206 subject enhances its desirability to stratospheric heights. Winner of 373 games, Matty won 30 or more games four different seasons, and his 3 shutouts in the 1905 World Series will forever be remembered as the Fall Classic’s most remarkable achievement. A virtually perfect registered image of the immortal right-handed hurler graces the obverse side with Matty’s iconic “hands at chest” pose exhibiting brilliant hues including the incredible green/blue setting. Fine centering, relatively clean white borders, and square corners complete a majestic looking obverse side. The critical ”Tolstoi Cigarettes” ad back print is bold and vivid, completing one of the premier T206 Mathewson Tolstoi subjects in existence!
