Seldom surfacing in the hobby is an extremely “high-grade” T206 Christy Mathewson “Black Cap” subject. It has been quite some time since we have encountered a “Black Cap Matty” residing in a “NM/MT-8” or better holder, justifying why this extraordinary PSA 8 Mathewson offering suffices as one of his finest T206 specimens. No high grade Christy Mathewson century old card should ever be taken for granted, and such is the case for this remarkable offering that resides as the SOLE and Highest Graded Sweet Caporal specimen listed on the renowned PSA “pop” chart. Furthermore, considering the myriad of T206 “black cap” Matty’s encapsulated by PSA, only a SINGLE example has managed to achieve the hallowed PSA Mint 9 grade for ALL advertisement backs! When the name Christy Mathewson comes up for conversation, similar to the former “E.F. Hutton” commercial, people listen. Mathewson’s iconic status in baseball history cannot be overemphasized, with Christy unquestionably regarded as one of the greatest pitchers to ever toe a pitching rubber. Mathewson amassed an amazing 373 lifetime victories, 2.13 E.R.A., and accumulated four 30-win seasons. Even more impressive were his 3 World Series shutouts against Connie Mack’s 1905 A.L. champion Athletics, a record that may never be equaled. Yet, his stunning “on the field” achievements” are just part of his unparalleled legacy since he was a childhood hero to most aspiring young ballplayers. Virtually every avid young fan worshiped the “Big Six” due to his combined pitching prowess and gentleman like status, ultimately resulting in his immortal nickname “The Christian Gentleman”.
Only a handful of cards could possibly boast the unparalleled prestige of a high-grade Christy Mathewson T206 subject with any Matty cardboard artifact carrying a lofty technical assessment highly sought after by the most sophisticated collectors. Unquestionably, Mathewson’s classic Carl Horner “hands at chest” pose resides as his most coveted image, and Matty’s immortal reverence is perfectly emanated via this classic “Black Cap” illustration. Superior focus, clarity and a brilliant blue/green setting highlight this museum worthy masterpiece as Mathewson prepares to deliver another one of his un-hittable “fade-aways”! Obviously, this card has defied “father time”, attaining a majority of its original pristine attributes throughout a century of potential wear. Although the image slightly favors the right edge, the aforementioned sparkling illustration, bright white borders, pinpoint corners and razor sharp edging all combine to substantiate the accurate technical assessment. As a final exclamation point, the extremely well centered “Sweet Caporal 350-460 Subjects” reflects bold red print and is affixed to a super clean off-white surface. With only a single PSA 9 Mathewson “Black Cap” specimen existing for ALL advertisement backs, now is the time to jump aboard the “Big Six” express, and ride this captivating keepsake directly to the winner’s circle!
