No one would argue that T206 collecting mania is spreading like a wildfire, with advanced tobacco enthusiasts gathering T206 specimens to suffice their various collecting angles. Whether it is obtaining various advertisement backs, Hall of Famers, Southern Leaguers or simply attempting the daunting task of completing the entire “Monster Set”, no type card issue is hotter than the illustrious T206 cigarette card distributed by the ATC between 1909 and 1911. There are a select group of hobbyists that are worthy of the ultimate challenge of ascertaining the industry’s finest graded T206 examples. While an individual’s respective budget is the primary barrier for this collecting angle, there also lies the secondary chore of actually locating high-grade copies. Simply stated, T206 subjects carrying “near mint” or higher grades are few and far between. Every so often, however, one comes along for the taking and with that in mind, presented here is an astonishing PSA 8 T206 Johnny Evers “portrait” with a Sovereign Cigarettes 150 Subjects ad back. Currently, this is the SOLE PSA Sovereign Cigarettes copy at this majestic tier with NONE graded higher. Even more enticing is that not a SINGLE “Mint-9” Evers portrait specimen is listed for ALL advertisement backs!
Hall of Famer Johnny Evers achieved his eternal legendary status by serving as the second link to the immortal Chicago Cubs double play combination “Tinker to Evers to Chance” which helped Chicago claim two world championships in 1907 and 1908. If you think that is not an extraordinary achievement, consider that the Cubs haven’t won since, spanning 104 years without a championship! Evers leadership qualities extended to the 1914 “Miracle Braves” as he also assisted his new Boston braves squad in upsetting Connie Mack’s mighty Athletics. No baseball card could possibly be a greater testament to his majestic status than this breathtaking PSA 8 offering that stands alone as the finest Sovereign Cigarettes Johnny Evers “portrait” subject on the planet! Evers classic portrait pose emanates brilliant facial hues with the imposing robust green background defining the world-class central image clarity and contrast. The illustration is well centered between four absolutely blinding white borders, the four corners reflect extremely sharp right angle formations, and no glaring surface blemishes are evident. As a final compliment to this pinnacle cardboard marvel, the somewhat tougher “Sovereign Cigarettes 150 Subjects” advertisement presents itself in bold green print, and is affixed to a nearly pristine white surface. Unquestionably, regardless of any ad back, this resides as the finest Johnny Evers T206 portrait example we have ever encountered, with its “best of the rest” status meriting it a final resting place in the most esteemed T206 compilation!
