Most would agree that no type card is currently “hotter” than the illustrious T206 tobacco subjects. In lieu of the recently celebrated 100th anniversary, collectors are scrambling to obtain some of the finest preserved specimens circulating within the hobby. Unfortunately, a majority of cardboard jewels are being held back by the elite PSA Set Registry enthusiasts who continue to compile their “world class” T206 compilations. For the past several auctions, Goodwin & Company has had the distinct honor of offering some of the premier T206 subjects in the hobby, and this auction continues to provide ample opportunities to capture a myriad of high grade examples for an abundance of Cooperstown inductees. One of those cherished Hall of Famers is the legendary Napoleon Lajoie, and it is his breathtaking Piedmont Cigarettes “throwing” T206 version presented here in a PSA 8 holder. Currently, only 5 other examples have been graded higher for ALL advertisement backs, with only 2 other “Piedmont Cigarette” specimens listed at this stratospheric tier. In fact, PSA’s illustrious “pop” chart substantiates the daunting task to obtain ANY super high grade T206 example with only 1.6% of the total 143,000+ encapsulated copies achieving the lofty “NM/MT 8” technical assessment and a paltry 0.2% graded higher!
For 21 seasons, Nap Lajoie terrorized American League hurlers, amassing a colossal 3,200+ hits and .338 lifetime batting average. Along with Hornsby and Collins, he is widely recognized as one of the finest 2nd baseman to ever command that position, and his unfathomable .422 batting average in 1901 still stands as a modern day A.L. record. Somewhat synonymous with that record is this outstanding offering that likewise qualifies with a handful of other subjects as one of the finest of its kind! Lajoie’s classic “throwing” illustration depicts an incredible array of grey uniform hues, with the entire image only partly favoring the right edge. While the image does exhibit a “hint” of off-registration, its stellar contrast and brilliant mixture of tranquil like yellow, orange and green background hues easily supersede this virtually negligible flaw. Super clean borders, strong right angled corners, virtually flawless surfaces and a nearly pristine bold mid-night blue “Piedmont Cigarettes 150 Subjects” ad back complete this cardboard gem that has withstood the test of time to reside as one of the supreme graded specimens
