A stellar third baseman, particularly for the era, Austin was immortalized in what many still feel is the greatest baseball photo of all time. Playing Detroit, Austin was the subject of a vicious slide by Ty Cobb. Standing along the third base line, with his giant box style camera, Charles Conlon thought he missed the shot. But when he developed the photo from glass plate negative in his studio, Conlon suddenly realized he had a shot for the ages.
