Clemente was on the verge of greatness in 1959. He batted .296 in an injury shortened season, but it was clear he was on the cusp of become one of the game’s elite. If you close your eyes, you can still see number twenty-one speeding on the basepaths, arms flying, legs pumping. You can still see the trademark spin and rifle-shot throws from the outfield. Greatness never leaves us once we’ve witnessed it. Which is why we’ll never forget Clemente.
