“The physician of the pitching emergency,” as described by Damon Runyon, Crandall was one of baseball’s first pure relievers. From 1910 – 1912 Crandall led the majors in relief appearances and recorded a remarkable 45-16 record. A solid hitter often used off the bench, Crandall hit .285 during his career.
