The ‘Say Hey’ Kid’s memorable over the shoulder 1954 World Series catch will always be remembered as one of baseballs greatest moments; however, even that catch cannot be considered as spectacular as this incredible PSA NM-MT 8 1952 Topps Rookie card. What can we say about Wille Mays that hasn’t already been said. Willie is only one of 6 members of the legendary 600 home run club and, after hitting his 600th in 1969, was only the 2nd player to accomplish the feat since Babe Ruth. He is considered by many experts to be the greatest ‘5 tool’ player to ever grace the diamond, and is easily the greatest living ballplayer. There isn’t enough space to define his overall accomplishments with over 3,000 hits, 24 All Star appearances, over 2,000 runs scored and two MVP awards just a few of his high-end feats. Just as significant as his batting excellence was his brilliance in the field. This can be summarized by a quote from one of his teammates in a 1960’s All Star game after Mays belted a triple….”The ball wasn’t caught because the only player in the world that could have caught it, hit it”!!! It is these legacies that make Willie May’s 1952 Topps Rookie card so desirable. One look at Willie’s youthful innocence turns back the clock to a baseball era when playing the game was simply more important than the salaries associated with each player. Card Qualities – Almost 1,000 1952 Topp’s Willie Mays rookies have been graded by PSA and of the 11 that have been graded higher, 2 are designated with qualifiers! What an incredible half body portrait image of Mays looking so youthful as if he posed for the picture right after a game of stickball in the streets of Harlem. Clear registration set against a dark violet background will make any advance collector yearn to add this card to their collection. Clean white borders are well defined by relatively perfect centering with sharp edging and square corners. The back of the card reflects fine print registration and both the front and back surfaces are clean. Considering that this is one of the key cards in this historic set, adding this card to your collection may be the best possible ‘catch’ you can accomplish to compare with one of Willie’s patented basket catches!
