1952 Topps Set

While Billy Martin never achieved HOF status, his popularity and desirability easily approaches any HOF inductee. Moreover, his 1952 Topps card is his ‘true’ rookie card since he never appeared in any previous Bowman issue. Billy’s popularity as a Yankee 2nd baseman was completely overshadowed by his managerial status. Bottom line is wherever Billy managed, he won. He lead the Twins, Tigers and Oakland A’s to division titles and won a World Championship managing the 1977 New York Yankees. His legacy will always be his animated confrontations with both umpires and players as well as his ability to win with any team he managed. He easily ranks as one of the greatest managers that ever lived and, one day, just may be inducted into Cooperstown for his managerial genius.
Card Qualities – Like his Yankee teammate Yogi Berra, currently only 2 Billy Martin rookies have achieved a higher grade than this PSA 8 masterpiece. A youthful looking Martin is pictured as an easy going rookie wearing his new Yankee hat that is highlighted with in a very eye pleasing blue. Centering from side to side is 50/50 with 65/35 top to bottom. All borders are clean, edging is straight and the corners are square with only the slightest touching to the top two corners. The print registration on the back is super clean with a white background (vs. the standard grey). Unlike Billy Martin, let’s not argue on this one……don’t pass on one of the most popular Yankees depicted in his most desirable card.
