Wolgast was one of the toughest fighters of all time, losing only one fight in his first 89 contests. Described as a “brawler deluxe” Wolgast outlasted Battling Nelson for the Lightweight Championship in 1910. Of particular interest, note the round card on the ropes behind Wolgast, signifying the 40th round. This relic from a bygone era shows incredibly well. Without the corner wear on the lower left, this card could easily have been a 6.
