Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson, statistically speaking, may not be the greatest player to ever put on cleats, but his “breaking the Major League baseball color barrier” in 1947 may be most significant occurrence in the history of our National Pastime. For this reason, hobby enthusiasts scramble to collect Jackie’s high end baseball cards, and one of them is offered here, his 1948/1949 Leaf rookie card in an SGC 96/9 holder. To date, SGC and PSA, combined, have encapsulated over 700 examples, with NONE graded higher! What else can we say about the immortal Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson that hasn’t already been said? His legacy goes far beyond his statistical greatness. He won an MVP, led the Dodgers to 6 pennants, stole bases, hit for average and power, fielded his position flawlessly and was as fiery a competitor the game has ever seen. Yet, for all of his stellar accomplishments, his place in baseball history will forever be correlated with being the first African American to play major league baseball. His courage, especially throughout the late 1940’s, was supernatural, comparable to the legendary “Iron Horse” Lou Gehrig. For these reasons, any early cardboard artifact of the great Robinson is highly sought after by serious enthusiasts, and this Leaf rookie card offering is a perfect specimen to augment any superior collection. Robinson’s classic portrait pose provides super contrast as well as a spectacular Dodger blue to his affixed cap. The clean white borders are centered relatively 50/50, framing a brilliant yellow background. The backside black print registration is vividly registered, only slightly off centered to the right. No surface wear is evident on both sides of the card. For a specimen that is almost 60 years old, the term “pack fresh” is an understatement. Overall, this example is an incredible testament to Jackie Robinson’s place in baseball history, excellence at its sure best with no other cards in the universe besting its ultra superior eye appeal and technical qualities. There are only a handful of mint Robinson Leaf rookies existing and for that reason alone, you should not hesitate on taking this one home!
