Form 1910 thru 1919, Coupon Cigarettes release three distinct tobacco card series that utilized similar players images from this classic T206 Tobacco “Monster Set”. Known or their various sizes that were typically smaller than a T206 subject, the standard 3rd Coupon Series was distributed in 1919 within the Louisiana Region with a “FACTORY No.3 DIST OF LA.” distribution print. In some rare instances, this typography was “blacked out” by a bold black “OVERPRINT”, with a revised FACTORY No.8 DIST OF LA.” label printed directly above the black overprint. These “overprint” scarce subjects are virtually non-existent with avnaced tobacco collectors actively seeking the few that do exist. With that in mind, presented here is the Detroit Tiger’s Hall of Fame Manger Hughie Jennings obscure 1919 Coupon Cigarette T213 Factory No.8 Overprint in a splendid PSA 4 holder. Unfortunately, the absolute rarity of this offering cannot be determined by reviewing a population report. Famous for his “Eeyah” phrase that he consistently shouted from the coaching box (it means “watch out” in Hawaiian), Hall of Famer Hughie Jennings was the late 19th century shortstop star of the Baltimore Orioles. Teaming with such stars as Keller, McGraw and Robinson, Jennings played a major role in leading the Orioles to 3 consecutive pennants from 1894 – 1896, even batting .401 in a single season. Yet, for all of his “on the field” accomplishments, he is still widely renowned for his managerial stint with the Detroit Tigers where he won 3 consecutive pennants his first three years of managing (1907 – 1909). His classic as well as popular “Eeyah” pose existing on a myriad of pre-WWI cards provides fine clarity, set against a bright yellow well centered background. Even wear to the four corners is consistent with the grade, and no obtrusive creasing is evident. The highly desirable reverse side “Coupon Cigarette Factory No.8” typography is vivid, with the critical bold black overprint completely intact. This is one cardboard artifact that will certainly not emerge in the near future, justifying why any advanced tobacco card collector should not be bashful when placing their winning bid!
