After the Hall of Fame catcher’s playing days, Bresnahan became owner of the Toledo Mud Hens through 1923. Two years later, he returned to the majors as a coach, first for the Giants and later the Detroit Tigers. Credited with inventing the batting helmet and the catcher’s mask, Bresnahan set the standard for early backstops, running games in a tough, no compromises fashion.
